Here you will find everything you need for a newborn baby. We have all the tips on which clothes the baby needs for the first time, which size fits best, and how to dress the baby during winter, spring, summer and autumn. We guide you through everything!

Babies' clothing sizes

Which size should I buy before my baby is born?

While we can’t give a definite answer, we generally recommend that you buy a few items in Size 50, one or two in Size 44 and one or two in Size 56. And if any item that’s too big will fit your baby eventually.

Which size should I choose for my baby’s first shoes?

As soon as your child starts to walk, it’s time for their first shoes. Choose lightweight, flat shoes with smooth soles, as too much traction will make walking difficult. Choose a higher style shoe that stays on your child’s foot and gives better balance. The shoes should also have good breathability because young children perspire a lot.

Which size socks should I choose?

Socks should stay up, the heel should remain in place and the fabric should not be too tight. A very young baby’s socks will rarely need washing, so two pairs in Size 10-12 and two in Size 13-15 are a good start if you’re buying before your baby is born. Our soft ribbed socks for newborns stay on your baby’s feet and are hugely popular!

Baby’s clothing in winter

When you take your baby out on a chilly winter day, it’s only natural to believe they need a lot of clothes, but try not to dress your baby too warmly. Gently feeling the back of your baby’s neck is the best way to find out how warm they are. If their neck feels sweaty, it’s time to remove a layer of clothing. If it feels cold, you should add a layer.

This is what we suggest for a normal winter day:

  • Layer 1 – the clothes next to the skin that keep the body dry. A bodysuit and tights/long johns made of cosy wool that absorbs and releases moisture.
  • Layer 2 – the clothes that keep the body warm. Trousers and top or an all-in-one in fleece or wool.
  • Layer 3 – the clothes that keep the cold and wind out. A warm winter overall in a windproof fabric that protects your baby from the wind and damp.
  • Hat – A helmet hat in wool is sufficient if your baby has a padded overall with a hood or is lying in a sleeping bag.
  • Mittens – If your baby’s hands are already protected by the foldover cuffs of their overall or by their sleeping bag, they won’t need mittens. But if it’s really cold outside, your baby may need mittens as well.
  • Slippers/socks – A pair of wool socks, fleece slippers or pram shoes will keep your baby’s feet cosy.

How to dress baby in winter

Baby clothes in spring

Use the layering principle to dress your baby. Remove, open up or add an extra layer, depending on the temperature. When it turns milder, you can remove the outer layer, but keep the middle layer.

The clothing we reccomend:

  • Layer 1: A two-piece set or an all-in-one made of soft fabric – we recommend cotton or wool.
  • Layer 2: Add an insulating layer if it’s chilly – we recommend fleece (not windproof fleece) or wool.
  • Layer 3: A windproof-fleece overall with foldover sleeve and leg cuffs.
  • Hat: A helmet hat that covers your baby’s ears, preferably a windproof one.
  • Blanket/sleeping bag: Easy to open and close/put on and take off.

Baby clothes in summer

It’s a good idea to dress your baby in light layers in summertime. Dress your baby as much as you think best, and then you can remove or add a layer as necessary.

The clothing we reccomend:

  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton top/bodysuit and full-length cotton trousers
  • Extra romper as needed.
  • Cotton socks.
  • Thin hat or sunhat.
  • Cardigan to put on if needed.
  • Baby blankets of various thicknesses, to put on and take off as the temperature changes.

Baby clothes in autumn

Dressing your baby in layers is a good idea in the autumn too. Gently feel the back of your baby’s neck to see if you need to add or remove a garment.

The clothing we reccomend:

  • Layer 1: A two-piece set or an all-in-one made of soft material – we recommend cotton on milder days and wool on chillier days.
