How to dress your baby in autumn
Read article
Autumn is a transitional season with very changeable weather. Thatâs why it can be difficult to plan which clothes to buy for a very young baby, who canât tell you if theyâre too hot or too cold. Weâve put together some general recommendations, but ultimately it will be up to you to decide what suits your baby best.
We usually suggest that you gently feel the back of your babyâs neck to find out how warm they are. If their neck feels sweaty, itâs time to remove a layer of clothing. But if it feels cold, you should add a layer. While a babyâs hands and feet will often feel slightly cooler than the rest of their body, obviously they shouldnât feel too cold.Â
This is what we suggest for a typical autumn day
Layer 1:Â A two-piece set or an all-in-one made of soft fabric; we recommend cotton on mild days and wool on chillier days.
Layer 2:Â Add an extra layer if itâs chilly; we recommend fleece (not windproof fleece) or wool.
Layer 3:Â A windproof fleeceoverall with foldover sleeve and leg cuffs.
Hat:Â A helmet hat that covers your babyâs ears, preferably a windproof one.

Good to keep handy
Taking an extra blanket or two with you is a quick and easy way to add warmth if necessary. Itâs also reassuring to have a spare helmet hat in case your babyâs hat gets lost. And if your baby has a sudden growth spurt, the foldover sleeve and leg cuffs may no longer cover their hands and feet. If that happens, youâll be glad to have a pair of booties and a pair of mittens with you!
Remember!
The thermometer doesnât tell the whole story â damp air and wind chill can make it feel even colder. And some babies retain heat better than others. Thatâs why you need to try out different solutions to find what suits your baby best.
