How to dress your baby in autumn
Read article
Autumn is a transitional season with very changeable weather. That’s why it can be difficult to plan which clothes to buy for a very young baby, who can’t tell you if they’re too hot or too cold. We’ve put together some general recommendations, but ultimately it will be up to you to decide what suits your baby best.
We usually suggest that you gently feel the back of your baby’s neck to find out how warm they are. If their neck feels sweaty, it’s time to remove a layer of clothing. But if it feels cold, you should add a layer. While a baby’s hands and feet will often feel slightly cooler than the rest of their body, obviously they shouldn’t feel too cold.
This is what we suggest for a typical autumn day
Layer 1: A two-piece set or an all-in-one made of soft fabric; we recommend cotton on mild days and wool on chillier days.
Layer 2: Add an extra layer if it’s chilly; we recommend fleece (not windproof fleece) or wool.
Layer 3: A windproof fleeceoverall with foldover sleeve and leg cuffs.
Hat: A helmet hat that covers your baby’s ears, preferably a windproof one.

Good to keep handy
Taking an extra blanket or two with you is a quick and easy way to add warmth if necessary. It’s also reassuring to have a spare helmet hat in case your baby’s hat gets lost. And if your baby has a sudden growth spurt, the foldover sleeve and leg cuffs may no longer cover their hands and feet. If that happens, you’ll be glad to have a pair of booties and a pair of mittens with you!
Remember!
The thermometer doesn’t tell the whole story – damp air and wind chill can make it feel even colder. And some babies retain heat better than others. That’s why you need to try out different solutions to find what suits your baby best.
