How to dress your baby in summer

Newborn babies are not able to regulate their body temperature in the same way as adults. This is why you should avoid exposing your newborn baby to very hot or very cold weather. We’ve collected our tips on how to dress your baby for the summer heat.

If your baby’s chest and neck feel sweaty, they are too warm and it will be time to remove a garment. It makes good sense to dress your baby in thin layers in the summertime. Dress your baby in the number of layers that feels right to you, and then you can remove or add a layer as necessary.

This is how we suggest you dress your baby for a warm summer’s day:

  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton top/bodysuit and full-length cotton trousers
  • Extra romper if necessary
  • Cotton socks
  • Lightweight hat or sun hat
  • Cardigan to put on if necessary
  • Baby blankets of various thicknesses, to put on and take off as the temperature changes.

Remember that newborn babies need to wear something on their head in spring and summer too, for protection against sunlight!

Remember!

Please remember that babies under 12 months should always be kept out of direct sunlight. Make sure to park your baby’s pram or pushchair in the shade, or use a clip-on sunshade or parasol to protect against the sun.

Remember to never to hang a blanket over the pram for sun protection, as this will obstruct ventilation and trap heat inside, which can be life-threatening. A blanket obscuring your view also means that you’ll have less supervision over your baby. Instead, opt for a clip-on sunshade or parasol suitable for prams and pushchairs, or preferably park the pram in the shade.

How can you be sure your baby’s not too cold or too hot?

To check whether a baby is overly warm or cold, gently feel the back of their neck. If it feels sweaty, your baby’s too warm; if it feels chilly, it’s time to add more layers. A crying or fussy baby could also be a sign that you need to remove or add a layer of clothing.

Please see our tips as general recommendations. They may not all be right for your baby – you know your child best!

For sunny day trips

Once your little one is a bit older, it’s wonderful to be able to spend a short while in the sun, paddling or playing in the sand. For sunny day trips, we recommend our soft and comfy UV garments with UPF 50, which provide virtually complete protection from harmful UV rays.
