If we as consumers invest in clothes made to last a long time and take care of them properly, we won’t need to buy as many new ones. This means less climate impact and a happier planet.
So how can we make sure our clothes get a longer life?
It’s all about quality. At Polarn O. Pyret, we’ve had the same vision since the start: stylish, functional garments tough enough to withstand the rough and tumble of childhood play in any weather – and comfy, soft everyday favourites that can be washed again and again. Clothes that last a long time and can be handed down once a child has outgrown them. Our goal is at least three children for each garment! And we’re almost there.
66% of our outerwear is worn by three children or more.
Quality and sustainable design ensure that our clothes stand the test of time. Every year, we conduct a survey asking customers how their garments are used and passed on. This year’s survey shows that 66% of our outerwear are worn by at least three children – proof that our sustainability efforts are paying off.

Child safety
The safety features on our clothes are just as important to us as the materials used to make them and we have zero tolerance for product recalls for child safety reasons. That is why we focus on technical solutions that not only minimise potential risks but also are specifically designed for children.
Each garment is subjected to a thorough risk assessment and independently tested in laboratories to ensure that it meets our child safety requirements. Our child safety criteria are based on the standards available in all our sales markets, but in many cases we set even stricter requirements.
Here are some examples of the features on our clothes for enhanced child safety:
Our caps never have metal buckles at the back, since these often have sharp edges that could graze a child’s soft skin.
The drawstring adjustment in our jackets is placed on the inside to reduce the risk of the cord getting caught in something.
All our neck warmers fit snugly around a child’s neck to minimise the risk of them getting caught in anything.
Our outerwear garments always have 360-degree reflectors, so children are clearly visible from all angles when it’s dark.
Wash your clothes correctly, always follow the washing instructions. Mend any garments that need repairing instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Pass on any clothes that your child has outgrown.

When a garment is worn out
Reusing garments is the best option from an environmental perspective. But what should you do with your clothes once they reach the end of their life? When a garment is completely worn out, it should be sent for recycling. It’s vital that clothing does not end up in your household waste. Different local authorities currently have different rules for worn-out textiles, with most of them providing some form of collection either curbside or at their recycling centres.

Animal welfare
For us, it is self-evident to respect animal rights. We don’t want any animal to suffer in order for us to make our clothes and we ensure this through our Animal Welfare Policy, with which all our external suppliers must comply.
Among other things, this means that:
- We only use wool from Merino sheep.
- We completely distance ourselves from mulesing and require a certificate that this has not been used when we buy our merino wool.
- All the wool we buy is certified according to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), ensuring the well-being of the sheep.
- We never use down or feathers in our products. There are now advanced alternatives available, such as PrimaLoft, that meet our requirements.
- We never use any type of fur or fur details.
- We never use any leather or leather details in our products.
