Not sure how to dress your baby for the stroller? How many layers and what to take into account? Here are all the answers and our top tips!
It’s important to remember that every child is different and only you know what’s best for your baby. What we know is that we have all the warm, thin, soft and protective garments you need for your child all year round.
Spring, autumn and winter
In cold or unpredictable weather during spring, autumn and winter, we recommend layering, so you can easily adjust the layers according to the temperature. Dressing your baby in layers will prepare them for all weather!
Layer 1:
A two-piece set or a overall made of soft fabric. We recommend cotton on milder days and wool on chillier days.
Layer 2:
Add an insulating layer if it’s cold. We recommend wool terry or fleece (not wind fleece). In milder temperatures, layers 1 and 3 are sufficient.
Layer 3:
The outer layer insulates and protects against all weather. We recommend our windproof fleece pramsuit with foldover wrist and ankle cuffs.
For the head:
A helmet hat that covers your baby’s ears, preferably a windproof one. In milder weather, a thin wool or cotton beanie is sufficient.
Blanket/footmuff:
During the coldest months, you need a warmly padded footmuff. When it’s a little milder, you can use a thinner footmuff or a warm blanket.
Garments to suit the season
You can start by replacing your baby’s winter mittens and hat for more lightweight versions. Replace a thick hat for a cotton one. If your baby has a overall with foldover wrist and ankle cuffs, you can use those instead of mittens and booties. When it’s still so cold that your baby needs an outer layer (layer 3), you can help to regulate your baby’s temperature with a middle layer. Take off, unzip or add an extra layer. When it gets milder, you can take off the outer layer, but keep the middle layer.Â
Summer
In summer, it’s important that the baby doesn’t get too warm in the stroller. Dress your baby in thin cotton clothing and make sure to park the pram in the shade, or use a clip-on sunshade or parasol to protect from the sun. Â
Remember to never to hang a blanket over the stroller for sun protection, as this will obstruct ventilation and trap heat inside, which can be life-threatening. A blanket obscuring your view also means that you’ll have less supervision over your baby. Instead, opt for a clip-on sunshade or parasol suitable for strollers, or preferably park the stroller in the shade.
How can you be sure that your baby is not too cold or too warm?
To check whether a baby is too warm or cold, gently feel the back of their neck. If it feels sweaty, your baby’s too warm; if it feels slightly cold, it’s time to add more layers. If your baby is crying or seems unhappy, this could also be a sign that you need to adjust their clothing.
Please consider our tips as general recommendations. Not everything we say will be right for your baby – only you know your child best!
